Yahoo!’s ‘Memorable Moments’ campaign has uncovered what are Britain’s most anticipated and treasured Olympic moments.
Yahoo! surveyed 3,000 people across Britain and results showed that the public expect Team GB diver Tom Daley to produce the most memorable moment this summer. One in three of the people who took the Yahoo! ‘Memorable Moments’ poll, picked Olympic debutant Daley as the man who they think will deliver the most medals for Team GB this summer. No pressure Tom.
Kriss Akabusi, Yahoo! Ambassador and former British Olympian commented on this, saying that; “Two in five Brits think that it’s outstanding sporting ability that makes a memorable moment, so expectation on Tom this year is high.”
Another Olympic-newbie and former World Heptathlon and Pentathlon Champion, Jessica Ennis came second in the opinion poll with 20% of the votes. Completing the top three is experienced British Olympian and three-time gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy (19%).
The Brit who has already won the hearts of the nation however is Kelly Holmes. One in five people voted her 800m and 1500m triumphs in Athens 2004, as their favourite memorable moment in British Olympic history.
Although Kelly Holmes topped the national and female poll, British males opted for the ‘man power’ option. Men ranked the moment that Chris Hoy became the first Brit to win three gold medals in a single Olympic competition, since Henry Taylor in 1908, as their number one most memorable. This was closely followed in second by the running rivalry between Steve Ovett and Seb Coe (15.4%), witnessed at the Moscow Olympics in 1980.
Yahoo! Ambassador, Kriss Akabusi wrapped up speaking about the ‘Memorable Moments’ poll by stating that “The countdown is on and everyone in Britain is looking forward to London 2012. The people have a huge passion for the Olympics and we’re all expecting great success from Team GB, with plenty of memories making it into British sporting folklore.”
