Women’s sport March-es on

Women’s sport is entering a new era and we can barely keep up with all the exciting announcements – March has been a BIG month!

It started with the Red Roses winning the Grand Slam at the Six Nations. As the men succumbed to a shock draw against an outstanding Scottish side, the women brought it home with a very convincing 80-0 win, scoring six tries in the first 26 minutes. Go girls!

Next up was the fantastic news of the launch of Telegraph Women’s Sport. In an incredible move by the paper, who are leading the way in covering women’s sport, they have hired renowned journalist and the co-founder of Women in Football, Anna Kessel. As if that news wasn’t exciting enough, they have also signed Judy Murray, sprint champion and current BT Sport Action Woman of the Year, Dina Asher-Smith as well as footballing hero, Jordan Nobbs as contributors. The paper will release a monthly print supplement as well as increasing coverage on all existing channels and outlets. What a move from The Telegraph.

In a huge moment for women’s football, The FA unveiled a momentous new partnership as they announced Barclays as the title sponsor of the FA Women’s Super League. The multi-million pound partnership is the biggest ever brand investment in UK women’s sport and includes the introduction of a £500,000 prize fund. This is quite literally a game changer and, having worked on the launch of the new fully professional league just last year, it’s unbelievable to see the game progressing so quickly.

The announcement from The FA, came not long after adidas confirmed that all of its athletes on the winning Women’s World Cup team would receive the same performance bonuses as their male counterparts. Phil Neville’s side will wear the brand new England women’s kit for the tournament which was revealed last week in Paris. Nike put on an incredible show in front of hundreds of influencers and media, alongside more than 40 top female sports women from around the world. I already have my eye on an away shirt.

We have a massive summer ahead with World Cups in both netball and football, so no doubt this is just the beginning. It is so rewarding to part of the movement, so as women’s sport continues to grow, get involved, get behind the girls and show your support! Pitch certainly will be… (It’s coming home!)
