Red Bull Air Race World Championship Comes to Ascot

The Red Bull Air Race World Championship season is now underway, as the world’s fastest motorsport series returns to the skies at exciting new locations around the world after a three-year break.  The 2014 schedule includes a race in the UK at Ascot Racecourse on August 16/17.

The Red Bull Air Race World Championship features the world’s best race pilots, including Britain’s reigning two times World Champion Paul Bonhomme, in a pure motorsport competition that combines speed, precision and skill.  Using the fastest, most agile and lightweight racing planes, pilots navigate a low-level aerial track made up of air-filled pylons 80 feet high at speeds of up to 230 mph.  The competition is expected to be even more intense in 2014 as all 12 pilots will be using a standardised engine and propeller, intensifying the focus on pilot skill and precision flying through the high-g turns in the challenging race courses.

UK pilot and reigning World Champion Paul Bonhomme is currently 2nd on the overall leaderboard and within reaching distance of the World title for the third time. Nigel Lamb, UK pilot, is the most accomplished and respected pilots in the history of the Red Bull Air Race and has returned to the series with a bang, currently in 3rd place.

Charles Barnett, CEO Ascot said,  “The Red Bull Air Race World Championship, like Ascot, is a respected global brand and showcases elite pilots to a worldwide audience.  This is by far the most significant event outside Horse Racing that we have staged at the racecourse.  The UK has a reputation as a leader in staging major sports events – the recent Olympic Games, of course, and high profile annual events such as Wimbledon, The Open Championship and, of course, Royal Ascot.  We are delighted to be lending our expertise and sharing in that of the Red Bull team in bringing to Ascot one of the most vibrant and exciting sports on the calendar through the UK leg of the Red Bull Air Race.”
