FIA Formula E Championship comes to BT Sport

BT Sport will offer the most comprehensive coverage of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship to date in the UK, after agreeing a deal for the rights to the electric street racing series.

Formula E is the world’s first fully-electric international single-seater category in motorsport. Formula E brings intense and unpredictable racing to some of the world’s most recognisable cities including Hong Kong, Rome, Paris, Berlin and New York.

BT Sport begins its coverage as Formula E enters a new era with the competitive debut of the Gen2 car in the upcoming new season, which begins in December in Ad Diriyah. The new model provides a step-up in performance with almost double the energy storage capacity – allowing teams and drivers to complete a full race distance at higher speeds.

The fifth season of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship will see 11 teams and 22 drivers tackle a variety of challenging circuits in 12 cities – across five continents – in a bid to be crowned champion. Formula E will be making its debut in the Middle East on December 15 for the season-opener in Ad Diriyah, with the championship once again coming to a close in New York City over the course of two days on July 13 and 14.

BT Sport will bring viewers coverage of every race – from preview shows and live practice to post-race highlights – including qualification and races. In addition, BT Sport will broadcast the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY, the world’s first all-electric production based international race series. With 20 production-based Jaguar I-PACE race cars with identical specifications going head to head, it’s down to driver skill and team tactics to decide who will be crowned champion.

Simon Green, head of BT Sport, said: “With the addition of Formula E, BT Sport customers can enjoy even more racing action on the home of brilliant live motorsport in the UK. As well as Formula E, which is one of the most exciting and innovative racing series globally, motorsport fans can look forward to coverage on BT Sport of MotoGP, European Le Mans, Grand Prix, British Speedway and World Rally Championship.”

Ali Russell, Media & Business Development Director at Formula E, said: “With the closest and most progressive racing series entering its biggest season to date, it’s great that fans across the UK get to watch every session of Formula E. On top of that, our first support series – the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY – championing the real race to road story.”

Formula E joins a BT Sport line-up which is already the exclusive home of MotoGP and British Speedway, the UEFA Champions League, Premier League coverage and FA Cup. BT Sport is also the home of domestic and European club rugby, while boxing fans can look forward to a top-class line up of fight nights featuring boxers from the Frank Warren stable.
