By Natasha Howe. Today, 24th June, marks one year until the start of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and, according to Seven, it is tipped to be the most watched Olympic and Paralympic games. It has also exceeded the record commercial revenue in London 2012, so there is no doubt that it will impress us all. What’s more, local sponsorship revenue has surpassed $3 million with marketing giant Dentsu Inc in charge.
David Wallechinsky, president of the International Society of Olympian Historians, adds that “The Olympics have become more sponsor- and television-driven,”. The Olympic Games are now a must-watch for all of us around the world, so appearance is key. To ensure Tokyo looks the best it possibly can, eight new venues are being built, with Tokyo spending over $20 billion in preparation for next year.
However, there are still some questions which remain unanswered: what about the number of brands involved? Tokyo 2020 has exceeded the record commercial revenue in London 2012. And what will an Olympics without Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps look like? Some rising stars that could be filling their empty boots in 2020 include 22 year-old US gymnast Simone Biles and British swimmer Katie Ledecky.
