Stamford runs Marathon
21.05.10

On April 25th, Stamford the Lion, Chelsea’s furry mascot, completed his first London Marathon.

Stamford finished in 6 hours and 25 minutes alongside his personal trainer Ben.

Running for Help a London Child, Capital FM’s chosen charity, Stamford and Ben raised more than £10,000. Cheered on by Chelsea FC fans, Stamford and Ben ran through the initial heavy downpour spurred on by their earlier good luck message from true Blues fan Fiona Phillips.

Stamford had started his training earlier in the year at The Chelsea Club and alongside the Chelsea players at the Cobham training ground. He was joined in the weeks before the Marathon itself by presenters from CBBC Sportsround, Sky Sports News and BBC London who were keen to watch the big lion run up those miles on the treadmill.

On finishing, Ben said: “We had a nice, cool start to the day but as the race went on it got hotter and harder for Stamford to run. But he wasn’t trying to beat any times, it was about finishing and what we could raise for Help a London Child. So we stuck together and we made it!”
