Pitch Inspection – Bayern Munich, Six Nations and Spurs

It was another weekend where sporting dreams and aspirations were made or broken. Here’s an alternative view of the weekend’s drama, therough the eyes of Pitch Social Insight, our bespoke social media monitoring tool:

On Saturday afternoon, Bayern Munich travelled to Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, hoping to secure a record 16 consecutive league wins. Despite going 1-0 down in the first half they fought back to finish the game 1-6.Interestingly, the top phrase on Twitter after the game among English-speaking fans was “Arsenal”, suggesting that fans had already turned their attention to the Champions League Round of 16 2nd leg on Tuesday. The German game’s most prominent negative phrase was “boring”. Not a word you’d usually associate with a 6-1 away win, but enthusiasm for Bayern’s dominance is clearly waning.

The BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells kicked off this week and Victoria Azarenka’s first round defeat featured heavily with “injured” one of the weekend’s most used phrases. “Andy” Murray also featured as a top phrase as he advanced to round 2 of the men’s doubles. On the men’s side of the draw, @GrigorDimitrov was one of the key influencers on Twitter, but he was usurped at the top by women’s title favourite @AnaIvanovic:

In the Premier League’s Saturday evening kick-off, Chelsea met Tottenham, with Spurs hoping to register their first win at Stamford Bridge for 24 years. Despite an average positive Sentiment of 58.6% going into the game, this dropped to 33.3% as Chelsea ran out 4-0 winners. Driven by disgruntled Spurs fans, Anger levels reached a high of 68.3% in the second half as Chelsea’s win put “shaky spurs” amongst the top phrases of the day as the Blues went “seven” points clear at the top of the league. @TSBible was one of the most influential on Twitter after posting the following tweet:

Miami Heat vs Chicago Bulls was the pick of the NBA games this weekend and it was chosen for live coverage on BT Sport on Sunday evening. Heat forward LeBron James had a drop in positive sentiment ahead of tip off, before a low of 61% as he clashed with Bulls Guard Jimmy Butler.

The most talked about event of the weekend was the hotly anticipated Six Nations clash between England and Wales at Twickenham on Sunday afternoon. In build-up to the game, “Mr Angry” (in-form full-back Mike Brown’s nickname), “avenge” and “drubbing” were amongst the top mentioned phrases. England went on to win the game 29-18, with “revenge” and “prince harry” amongst the most heavily used phrases on Twitter.
